Lieutenant Colonel Alonzo McNeal

Professor of Military Science

Biographical Information

Lieutenant Colonel Alonzo McNeal commissioned into the Armor Branch through the United States Military Academy in 2009. He has served in standard leadership and staff positions within both light and mechanized Armor and Infantry formations. He has completed operational, institutional, and scholastic broadening assignments. 

As a lieutenant, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, TX in 2010. He deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq as part of Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, and later to Mehtar Lam, Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.


As a captain, he earned a Master’s in Organizational Leadership from Columbus State University. He was then assigned to Fort Bragg, NC where he commanded Alpha Troop, 5th Battalion, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in 2016. Upon completion of command, he was selected to serve as the Aide-De-Camp to the Division West, First Army Commanding General at Fort Hood, TX in 2018. 

As a major, he earned a Master’s in Defense and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in 2020 and then served as the Resolute Support Chief of Operations in Kabul, Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon redeploying, he joined the 3rd Armored Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, CO in 2022, where he served as the Operations Officer for 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment. In August 2022, he deployed to Europe for an Atlantic Resolve rotation, which later transformed into Operation European Assure, Deter, and Reinforce. In June 2023, he assumed the role of Battalion Executive Officer for the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment. In March 2024, he deployed to Europe again in support of Operation European Assure, Deter, and Reinforce. In May 2024, he assumed the role of a Missile Defense Officer in the USNORTHCOM Joint Operations Center and later as a Ballistic Missile Defense analyst. 

LTC McNeal assumed the role of Professor of Military Science at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in July 2026.

LTC McNeal is a graduate of the Joint Combined Warfighting School, Naval Command and General Staff College, the Maritime Advance Warfighting School, the Maneuver Captains Career Course, and the Armor Officer Basic Course. His personal awards include two Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, five Army Commendation Medals, and four Army Achievement Medals. He is a recipient of the Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, and one foreign award. 

He is married to Brittany. Together they have two sons, Alonzo III (7) and Elijah (4), and live in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
